Schlumberger – Store Yard Racking

New Dexion racking system increases store yard storage capacity at Schlumberger.

Schlumberger is the world’s largest oilfield services organisation, employing approximately 120,000 staff in over 85 countries worldwide. The company supplies technology, integrated project management and information solutions to clients throughout the oil and gas industry.

Schlumberger’s lack of space at their storage yard was having an adverse effect on business operations. Having recently taken on a contract that would involve storing a large amount of extra materials in their already crowded site a solution had to be implemented.

CSI (formerly ESE) impressed Schlumberger on a previous minor racking project and was approached to develop a new storage solution that would maximise their yard space.

Working in partnership with Schlumberger staff, CSI’s solutions team developed a system that would suit their workflow and increase storage capacity.

The final project involved the full design, supply and installation of heavy-duty Dexion racking. With high load capacities of up to 200 tonnes in double-sided configurations, the new system stores all of Schlumberger’s current stock with significant room for future expansion. Designed without uprights at the front the racking was the ideal choice for safely storing the company’s tubular products. The versatility of the system has allowed Schlumberger to store their irregularly shaped equipment alongside pallets, with just the help of pallet support bars for added security.

Before beginning the installation, a concrete slab was laid, the existing ground was not suitable to support the racking. CSI worked with contractors advising on point loads needed to sustain the new installation.

To protect Schlumberger’s goods from the elements, CSI (formerly ESE) fitted a canopy roof which was tested to ensure compliance with national regulations regarding wind, rain and snow loadings. The team chose a galvanised finish for the racking to protect it from poor weather conditions. Guide rails were also fitted to offer further protection for racking components.

As Schlumberger needed to remain operational throughout the project, CSI phased the installation to minimise disruption to the business completing the project on time and within the agreed budget.
